Edited by Susan Arndt (University of Bayreuth, Germany), Yacouba Banhoro (Université Joseph Ki-Zerbo, Burkina Faso), Taibat Lawanson (University of Lagos, Nigeria), Enocent Msindo (Rhodes University, South Africa) and Peter Simatei (Moi University, Kenya)

The Cluster of Excellence “Africa Multiple – Reconfiguring African Studies” is planning to publish an edited volume titled “Covid-19 in Africa: The Multiple Dimensions of Health and Care”. The volume is designed as an inter- and transdisciplinary research endeavour, resulting from collaboration between all of the Cluster’s partners: the University of Bayreuth (Germany), Moi University (Eldoret, Kenya), Rhodes University (Makhanda, South Africa), University of Lagos (Nigeria); Joseph Ki-Zerbo University (Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso).

Being pandemic, the corona crisis is a global matter. Yet, while deeply rooted in processes of globalization, it is directly experienced in local and national contexts. Although the World Health Organization has provided overarching guidance about the pandemic and hygienic procedures, many of the strategies are heavily informed by expectations and needs of the
Global North. Further, the pandemic itself demonstrates the fractured nature of healthcare systems globally, and particularly in Africa.
We intend to ask the following key questions: How have Africa and its diasporas experienced and perceived of this pandemic? What has been the continent’s response and contribution to the various global and local dynamics of the pandemic healthcare? What could studies of the Covid-19 pandemic teach us about global power politics and attendant inequalities?
What new socialities is this pandemic creating, and how could these be best understood? How is the Covid-19 crisis connected to and affected by discrimination and privileges, resistance, solidarity and care?

The Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence hereby solicits contributions for this inter- and transdisciplinary volume. If you are interested in contributing, please send us a 250-word abstract stating what your proposed chapter is about and how it links to the book’s central
focus.

Please send your abstract no later than 25 July 2020 to: susan.arndt@uni-bayreuth.de. The authors of the selected articles will be informed by 15 August 2020. Final papers have to be submitted by 30 October 2020.
